What Is an ECN Account?

Look beyond an account label to its written execution terms.

QB Academy: market knowledge and trading education

What the term describes

ECN means electronic communication network. In retail account marketing, the label is often associated with spread-plus-commission pricing. The label alone does not prove a particular execution model.

What to compare

Review spreads, commission per side or round trip, minimum volume, margin and overnight charges. Ask for the execution policy and the account’s actual product specifications.

Questions for the provider

Ask how orders are handled, what happens during price gaps and which strategies are permitted. Do not infer liquidity relationships or direct exchange access from the account name.

Practice first

Use a demo to learn order entry and cost displays. Confirm that live account terms match your intended approach before committing funds.

Frequently asked

Does ECN mean guaranteed execution?

No. Execution still depends on the applicable contract, available prices and market conditions.
